BANGKOK, May 5 -- Thailand recorded its first case of Brazil COVID-19 variant as the kingdom intensified efforts in fighting the third wave of infections.

bringing the total infections in the country to 74,900 and 318 fatalities.

Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan reiterated the Brazilian variant was detected in a state quarantine facility.

“It has not been detected in local communities,” she said at COVID-19 daily briefing here today.

Thailand is facing an uphill task as COVID-19 cases piled up following the highly contagious B. 117 variant first detected in the United Kingdom responsibe for the spikes in the country since April.

Of the 2,112 new COVID-19 cases, Apisamai said 2,107 were local transmissions including 1,955 of those who sought treatment at hospitals and 152 via active case detection and five imported cases.

She said 15 fatalities involved eight men and seven women aged between 50 and 86 years old with four in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Sukhothai (two each) and one each from Pathum Thani, Rayong, Yala, Ayutthaya, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Phanom and Nakhon Pathom

To date, a total of 30,222 remain hospitalized and 1,042 in critical condition including 343 on ventilators, she said.

“The infection rate in Bangkok and peripheral areas remain high. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will continue to conduct active case detection in densely populated areas,” she said adding that about 30,000 active case detection have been conducted in Pathum Wan district where 162 were found positive.
