Indonesia detects Indian and South African coronavirus variants

JAKARTA, May 4 -- The virulent Indian coronavirus variant and the South African B1351 variant have now been detected in Indonesia.
There have been two COVID-19 cases in Jakarta involving the coronavirus variant first identified in India while one case involving the South African variant detected in Bali, said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
"We must contain the virus transmission. The virus will immediately spread because they are more contagious," he said during a press conference broadcast live on local television here today.
So far, Indonesia has also found 13 cases of the so-called B117 variant from the UK.
The World Health Organization has identified the B117 and B1351 as variants of concern due to evidence of increased transmissibility. The Indian variant, formally known as the B1617, is drawing global attention, as India is currently facing the world's largest case surges.
