Over 80 people killed in West Sulawesi quake

JAKARTA, Jan 18 -- More than 80 people are reported to have been killed so far in the magnitude 6.2 temblor that hit West Sulawesi on Friday (Jan 15).
The search and rescue operation to find victims feared trapped in collapsed buildings is still ongoing.
According to Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Data, Information and Communications Centre head Dr Raditya Jati, based on the data collected as of 8 am (local time) today, 70 bodies were found in Kabupaten Mamuju and 11 more in Kabupaten Majene.
"A total of 19,345 residents now have been placed at temporary evacuation centres, more than 800 people have been injured, about 1,150 houses and buildings including schools and a hospital were damaged in the incident,” he said in a statement today.
The temblor with epicentre 6km northeast of Majene, West Sulawesi struck at 1.28 am Eastern Indonesian Time and was followed by more than 30 aftershocks up to magnitude 5.5.
