KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 -- Police detained three individuals including a married couple to assist in the investigation into a staged robbery of money belonging to a furniture manufacturing company in Rawang, last Sunday.

Gombak district police chief, ACP Arifai Tarawe said the suspects, aged between 25 and 30, were arrested after finding that one of them had lodged a false police report.

He said that during the incident, a 25-year-old saleswoman lodged a report claiming that her handbag was snatched while walking alone to a nearby bank to deposit cash belonging to the company where she worked.

“The woman claimed she suffered the loss of RM6,788 including RM6,288 belonging to the company.

“She came forward to give a statement on the incident but it was found that the report made was false as the robbery was staged ahead with her husband and two of her husband's male friends,” he said when contacted, here, today.

Arifai said the woman eventually admitted to lodging a false report as she needed the money for daily expenses.

Arifai said police picked up her husband in Bandar Sunway who admitted that his wife's handbag was not stolen and the sum belonging to the company was transferred to a personal bank account, besides paying his two accomplices.

He said police had nabbed one of the accomplices and were searching for the other. The suspects are being remanded until Friday under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

Arifai said police would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone who lodged a false police report.
