SHAH ALAM: The sessions court here is packed with members of the media who are gathered for the first day of an inquest into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.
Journalists and cameramen, many of whom arrived as early as 8am, are jostling for position and anxiously waiting for the proceedings to begin.
Earlier today, officers from the Fire and Rescue Department were seen entering the court’s witness room.
Also seen were the lawyer representing Adib’s family, Yahya Othman; and Adib’s brother, who is representing his father, Mohd Kassim Abdul Hamid.
Around 30 witnesses, including six doctors, have been lined up to testify before coroner Rofiah Mohamad.
The inquest was fixed for Feb 11 to 28; March 1, 4 and 5; March 19 to 29; and April 1 to 12 by the coroner’s court in Shah Alam.

Last Friday, a request by the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple task force and 50 devotees of the temple to be an interested party and participate in the inquest was dismissed by Rofiah, and later by Shah Alam High Court judge justice Abdul Karim Abdul Rahman.
Rofiah said that there were no substantive, genuine and reasonable grounds to make them interested parties.
“This inquest is not about pin-pointing criminal liability, but to assist the court (to determine) the cause of the deceased’s death,” she said.
Adib, 24, died from severe injuries sustained after allegedly being assaulted by rioters at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on Nov 27.
He had been part of an emergency response team dispatched to the scene to douse a vehicle, which had been torched.
Despite showing signs of recovery while being treated at the National Heart Institute, Adib died on Dec 17.
