KUALA NERUS, Oct 19 -- Residents of Kampung Pengkalan Atap, Batu Rakit here were alarmed when a wild elephant encroached on their residential area this morning.

A resident, Mazlan Mat Jusoh, 53, said the presence of the elephant which damaged a car and demolished the fence of his house, was noticed by his wife Wan Rasyidah Wan Yusoh at about 6.20 am today.

“At that time, my wife was cooking in the kitchen when she heard a noise at the back of the house. Then she spotted a dark and tall thing wandering around.

“She woke me up and I saw an elephant crashing into the fence of the house and was walking towards my mother's house (Wook Umat) who lived next door. After that, I noticed the back of the car was already dented, possibly by the elephant,” he said when met by reporters at his residence here today.

Mazlan, who is also a fisherman, said it was the first time such an incident had happened since he lived in the village more than 30 years ago.

Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Loo Kean Seong when contacted said the male elephant, estimated to be 10 years old, was seen roaming in Kampung Sungai Taron in Setiu on Saturday (Oct 16).

He said the elephant, which is estimated to weigh two tonnes, was caught by his team after being shot with a tranquilizer in the village at around 10 am today and efforts are now underway to relocate the animal.

Earlier, Batu Rakit State Assemblyman Bazlan Abd Rahman said about five houses in Kampung Pengkalan Atap suffered minor damages due to the elephant.
