KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to contribute 559,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Bangladesh and 283,400 doses to Laos, to ensure that countries in need have equal access to the supply of COVID-19 vaccine.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said until today, the complete vaccination rate for the Bangladeshi population was 20 per cent while for Laos it was 24 per cent, and the two countries would receive vaccine supply contributions today (6) and Dec 8.

He assured that with the donation, the country still has an adequate stock of vaccine supply for the vaccination program of the adult, adolescent population as well as the provision of booster doses to those who have qualified.

"The Ministry of Health (MOH) hopes that this contribution can help the efforts of the governments of both countries in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic as well as further increase the vaccination rate in their respective countries.

"The government through the MOH and Wisma Putra will continue to identify and assist countries that have recorded low vaccination rates through the provision of COVID-19 vaccine donations," he said in a statement here today.

Khairy said Malaysia had previously received vaccine donations from four countries, namely Japan, the United States, China and the United Kingdom with a total donation of 2,913,790 doses.

"This contribution has helped increase the rate of vaccination coverage in the country and now, Malaysia hopes to do the same to countries in need," he said.
