PUTRAJAYA, July 6 -- About 33 per cent or 151,729 individuals out of 457,462 people in the B40 group who underwent health screening through the Healthcare Scheme for B40 Group (PeKa B40) were diagnosed with at least one non-communicable disease (NCD), said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.
“They are not aware that they are suffering from NCD,” he said when presenting the PeKa B40 Report 2019-2020 online today.
Among the NCDs detected through the screening were diabetes at 10.4 per cent, high cholesterol (29.8 per cent), high blood pressure (13.8 per cent), mental health problems such as depression (1.6 per cent) and anxiety (1.4 per cent), he said.
“Prior to PeKa B40 screening, they had never undergone any health screening, let alone a follow-up treatment,” he said.
The PeKa B40 scheme is managed by ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd which provides four benefits, namely health screening, medical devices assistance up to RM20,000, incentive to cancer patients (RM1,000) and transport incentive up to RM1,000.
The scheme, which focuses on NCDs, is provided free of charge to all recipients of cost of living allowance (BSH) or Bantuan Prihatin Rakyat (BPR) as well as their spouses, aged 40 and above.
Dr Adham said that from April 15, 2019 to Dec 31, 2020, a total of RM62.5 million was spent to fund the PeKa B40 scheme which aims to make early detection of NCDs among the B40 group.
Of that amount, RM38.5 million was spent on health screening benefits which include taking medical history, physical examination, mental health, breast and prostate cancer screenings as well as urine and blood tests.
He said the PeKa B40 health screening could be done at private clinics as well as MOH health clinics nationwide.
“For the benefit of medical device assistance, a total of RM20.9 million was spent to fund the application of 10 types of medical equipment including hearing aids, nutritional support assistance and wheelchairs,” he said.
A total of RM1.6 million was spent on incentives for cancer patients while RM1.5 million was spent on transport incentives to ease the burden of travel expenses, he said.
Dr Adham said a total of 2,112 private general practitioners and 182 private medical laboratories were involved in the PeKa B40 scheme.
“PeKa B40 is a government initiative in helping the less fortunate in Malaysia in long-term healthcare.
“We really hope that more people in the B40 group will benefit from this scheme to ensure that early detection of NCDs can be done and prevent complications in the future,” he said.
