BANGKOK, July 5 -- A massive explosion at a foam and plastic pallet manufacturing factory at the outskirts of Bangkok early this morning shook nearby buildings, including the nearby Suvarnabhumi Airport terminal building and the Chularat 9 Hospital.
At least 20 people were injured and hundreds of had to evacuate, including more than 100 patients from the intensive care unit (ICU) as well as COVID-19 patients from the hospital.
In the 2.50 am (local time) incident, the fire broke out at the factory in Bang Phli district at Samut Prakan province and the explosion caused damage to nearby buildings and houses.
Thick black smoke was seen emanating from the burning factory.
The injured include five volunteers, while 70 houses and 15 vehicles were damaged.
Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Bang Phli district chief Somsak Kaewsena said people residing within 5-kilometer radius were ordered to evacuate.
Bangkok Post reported that there were five or six warehouses in the factory compound where 50 tonnes of chemicals were stored.
The explosion shook the terminal building at Suvarnabhumi Airport but the airport operations continued unhindered.
