JOHOR BARU: A former private secretary of a PKR lawmaker pleaded not guilty to seven cheating charges at the Magistrate's Court here Sunday (Sept 22).

S. Saswin Nair, 27, who previously worked under Tebrau MP Steven Choong, was charged with the offences in front of magistrate Haffiza Jemali here.


Based on the charge sheets, Saswin was alleged to have committed the offence between November 2018 and July this year in Johor Baru and Pasir Gudang.

He was alleged to have cheated and deceived six victims of between RM150 and RM15,000, which amounted to a total value of RM39,450.


The cheating involved back-to-school vouchers, affordable housing deposits in Taman Daya and gold purchases.

He had committed the offences and was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of not more than 10 years' jail, whipping and fine upon conviction.

Saswin was also charged under Section 417 of the same Act, which carries a maximum imprisonment of not more than five years' jail, a fine or both upon conviction.

Haffiza then set bail at RM2,000 for each charge with two sureties and also set Oct 23 for case management.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Chan Choon Yew and Adilah Nur Yahya prosecuted while lawyer Iskandar Shah Ibrahim represented the accused.
