PETALING JAYA: The competition between Umno and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to get support from PAS will push Malaysia to become an Islamic country, claims Gerakan.

He said after a few component parties and its own MPs exited Barisan Nasional, Umno had been actively courting PAS.
With the cooperation of these two parties, Barisan emerged victorious in the Cameron Highlands by-election last month, defeating Pakatan Harapan, he added.
“Currently in the Semenyih by-election, Bersatu, being a ruling party, is also aggressively courting PAS.
“Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced he signed an agreement stating that PAS would not assist Umno in the upcoming by-election.
“Although we are still vague on the possible hidden agendas behind this agreement, it would threaten Malaysia’s status as a secular country,” said Lau in a statement on Feb 16.
He claimed that PAS had never ceased its attempt at “turning Malaysia into an Islamic country to implement their hudud agenda.”
With Umno and Bersatu trying to get support from PAS, it will only boost the bargaining power of the Islamist party, said Lau.
“Hence, Malaysia's status as a secular nation is hanging by a thread,” he added.
Lau said Gerakan, as an independent and multi-racial party, would always insist on defending Malaysia’s secular status, and would not tolerate the country being ruled via hudud.
